A City Councillor wants the City of Ottawa to require the Fire Chief is bilingual.
Rideau-Vanier Councillor Georges Bedard is among several City Councillors questioning the process to hire a new Chief after the city announced the new Fire Chief is not bilingual.
John deHooge will be introduced Thursday as the new Chief of the Ottawa Fire Service, ending the six month search to replace retired Chief Rick Larabie.
DeHooge is the Fire Chief and General Manager of Protective Services in Waterloo.
Councillor Jacques Legendre says he is shocked the city couldn’t find a qualified bilingual candidate in Canada.
Bedard wants the city to amend its policy so that the Fire Chief position would be designated as bilingual, or would require a special exemption from City Council.
The city conducted two cross-Canada searches for a new Fire Chief.
