An Ottawa City Councillor wants city staff to be able to assist relief efforts in Haiti.
The Ottawa Sun reports Maria McRae is asking Council to allow staff who volunteer with aid organizations to help with Haiti's earthquake relief efforts.
In a motion for today's Corporate Services and Economic Development Committee meeting, McRae recommends the City Manager liasie with staff to provide in-kind support to the relief work and rebuilding projects.
The River Ward Councillor also wants the city to offer to set up an emergency committee with city staff to come up with an action plan, working with the Federal Government and the local Haitian community.
McRae says the city has staff with wide-ranging expertise that could help Haitians cope with the devastation.
