    Employment practically static

    Employment growth in Canada sputtered in neutral in January. Statistics Canada says a net gain in employment in Ontario was offset by big losses in Alberta, Manitoba and Newfoundland and Labrador. The agency's latest labour force survey says the unemployment rate crept up a tenth of a percentage point to 7.2%, with more people entering the job market. StatsCan says 5,700 fewer jobs were recorded, but the number was within the survey's margin of error.

    New York crane collapse

    One person has died and two others have been seriously injured after a crane collapsed this morning in Manhattan, smashing the roofs of parked cars. The crane landed across an intersection and stretched much of a block in the Tribeca neighbourhood. There was damage to the roof of a nearby building, and debris littered the street.
