Slow XP Shutdown

Assuming that there is no malware causing the slowdown, you may want to try installing Microsoft's User Profile Hive Cleanup Service.

You can use the link that follows to download the installation file.

Running out of disk space

I'm running XP, and my 18Gb OS disc is running out of space. I've deleted temp files etc, but still don't have enough space to perform a disc defrag. I've upgraded to IE 8, however I see 2 folders in my Windows folder, named ie7 and ie7 updates, occupying about 320Mb. Can I safely delete those 2 ie7 folders?

Problems after anti virus scan

I'm using the Bell Internet Security Services Anti-Virus. A couple of days ago after an anti virus scan I was alerted that 2 Trojans had been discovered and received the following messages.

C:\Program Files\InstallShield Installation Information\{2631C4A0-167B-4332-A46A-8EEEE1D0AD07}\RPS SafeConnect.msi
Some parts of this file could not be scanned because they are password protected. The real-time protection will automatically scan these parts when they are accessed.

E:\My Download Files\aawsepersonal.exe
Some parts of this file could not be scanned because they are password protected. The real-time protection will automatically scan these parts when they are accessed.[/b]The program was unable to remove them, however they were quarantined.

Since then after each anti virus scan I receive the same message including a notification that the system has successfully recovered from a serious problem. The advisory is that my hard drive has serious problems and that I should re-boot, backup my files etc. All re-boots have been uneventful.

Do I have a serious problem in the making, or did the Trojans leave something behind? Unfortunately I can't find the name of the Trojan in my quarantine folder.

lost pictures

I'm a photographer. On Sunday morning I downloaded the pictures from my Sat. shoot onto my external hard drive. I specifically remember doing this.
I then reformatted the card and used it again.

It's Monday and those pics are not anywhere- external, internal or upside down!! They are not in my recycle bin.
I know I can use a program (i have Undelete) to retrieve any pics not overwritten on my memory card- but I need all the pics!!

Any idea how the pics got missing in action? Could it have been a virus?

I recall that you can reset your computer time to before an event happened to retrieve data - would this apply in this case?

Microsoft 7

Just installed the RC of Microsoft 7. My pc has:

AMD Athlon 64 3700+ running at 2.2 GHz
2GB RAM
BFG GeForce 9600 512 OC using driver version 186.08

Runs smooth so far. I installed my game Prey and had to operate it as Windows XP (SP3) so I'll be checking for updates.

Also installed Open Office 3.1, Nero 9, Avast anti-virus, & Foxit pdf reader. Firefox 3.5 beta, Opera 9.64 and Thunderbird. All work well so far and except for Prey I have not had to make anything XP compatible.

I like it so far. I haven't spent too much time with Vista though my wife & daughters pc have it.

Anyone else have thoughts, etc?

Hi there -- as you probably can tell from the description, my all-in-one seems to be "stuck" in the align cartrdiges mode.

On the weekend I changed the black cartridge & have not been able to use it since -- I figured it might need to run the test once or twice, but not 6-8 times!

I've tried using a different cartridge & have re-positioned the colour cartridge too, but to no avail.

The machine is about 3 years old, past the warrenty period, sigh, and gets only a moderate amount of use.
