Sunday House Call - Nadeem Esmail Part 1
When we last spoke to Nadeem Esmail in October 2007 regarding a report on efforts to reduce hospital wait times in Canada, the results were less than stellar.: wait times remained a major problem and barrier for prompt care. The Fraser Institute's annual report on hospital wait times, the 19th edition of Waiting Your Turn: Hospital Waiting Lists in Canada reports that Canadians seeking surgical or other therapeutic treatment are enduring a median wait time of 16.1 weeks, roughly the same delay they experienced in 2000-2001. The result is disappointing because of the substantial increases in health care spending since then.

Sunday House Call - Dr. Irene Kochevar Part 1
I am reminded of a scene from the science fiction movie Logan’s Run where a plastic surgeon uses a laser to cut the skin, makes the cosmetic change, and then seals the wound with a laser leaving no scar. Although this seemed an impossible feat of technology at the time, real science has edged closer to it.

Researchers at the Massachusetts General Hospital are using light to "stitch" surface wound openings back together. The process is called nanosuturing or photochemical tissue bonding.

· Dr. Irene Kochevar, Ph.D., Professor of Chemistry & Dermatology at the Harvard Medical School Wellman Center for Photomedicine and Massachusetts General Hospital, Harvard Medical School.

Sunday House Call - Dr. Noni MacDonald Part 1
As the focus of attention turns to the H1N1 outbreak that is now occurring across the country, the public faces an array of information sources that will influence their opinion about vaccination.

There have been many claims and critiques about the H1N1 vaccine and it has become a springboard to envelop other vaccines and vaccination programs within the realm of criticism.

Where do these claims of harm from vaccines originate? Is there scientific evidence to support these claims? Where should the public look for information that they can use and be confident that what they are reading is valid?

· Dr. Nora (Noni) MacDonald, MD MSc FRCPc, Professor of Pediatrics at Dalhousie University and Division Pediatric Infectious Diseases at IWK Health Center. She also is a consultant to the Department of Immunization, Vaccine, and Biologicals of WHO since completion of her term on the World Health Organization’s Global Advisory Committee on Vaccine Safety. Dr. MacDonald has long been recognized in Canada, as an advocate for children and youth health and as a leader in paediatric infectious disease.

Afternoon Edition - Your Concerns on Lansdowne Live
Doug Skelly, CFRA listener and resident of Centretown, speaks to Rob Snow about his concerns over Lansdowne Live which he illustrated in an email to The Afternoon Edition yesterday. As a Centertown resident and taxpayer, I listened with interest to the comments you made during this week's Municipal Panel show on CFRA, and would like to address some of the misinformation that you presented regarding the Lansdowne Development proposal. I've transcripted some of your comments below. 1. " ... give away parkland, we're giving that away to the consortium " OSEG is leasing the land, it's not being given away. And Lansdowne Park is not and has never been a "park" per se, no more than Fenway Park is a park or Madison Square Gardens is a botanical garden. 2. " find out whether we want an outdoor stadium " There have been numerous survey's over the last few years asking this question, they almost always produce a majority YES result http://ottawa.ctv.ca/servlet/an/plocal/CTVNews/20090411/OTT_stadium_poll _090411/20090411/?hub=OttawaHome and http://www.ekos.com/admin/articles/dec2008lansdowne.pdf 3. You suggested the stadium should be smaller, then referred to McGill Stadium where the Montreal Allouettes play McGill seats around 20,000 and is being upgraded to accommodate another 5,000, the OSEG proposal is for a 26,000 seat stadium. 4. " it needs to be a flexible, multipurpose stadium " OSEG is proposing a stadium for pro and amateur football and soccer, outdoor concerts, amateur training particularly in winter months and other amateur sports 5. " football's a dying sport in this country " Take a look at the ratings on English-Canadian television, mid Oct. 2009 1. NHL: Rangers at Leafs/Senators at Canadiens, Saturday, CBC: 1,718,000 2. NHL: Canucks at Wild, Saturday, CBC: 986,000 3. CFL: Roughriders at Stampeders, Saturday, TSN: 930,000 4. CFL: Lions at Blue Bombers, Sunday, TSN: 893,000 5. CFL: Eskimos at Argonauts, Friday, TSN: 693,000 6. NFL: Early games, Sunday, CTV: 680,000 7. NFL: Bears at Falcons, Sunday, TSN: 586,000* 8. CFL: Tiger- Cats at

Sunday House Call - Dr. David Chan Part 1
The Ontario Government’s electronic medical record fiasco spent a billion dollars with little to show for it. At McMaster University, physicians and programmers have developed a comprehensive, secure, web-based and open source electronic health records system that is ready to be rolled out across Canada.

There are several major differences in the way the system was developed. While the government used a top down approach with consultants who do not actually treat patients, the team at McMaster used a ground-up approach based on clinical need and patient-encounter experience.

The McMaster EMR, Oscar, is an open-source program that is continually upgraded through direct clinical use. Physicians, who have programming experience or programmers hired by the clinical staff develop modifications that are submitted to McMaster for quality control and added to the program.

What does this mean for the patient? What can it do for them to assist them in being proactive in their health care management?

Oh yes, one more thing. The McMaster EMR is FREE!

· Dr. David H Chan, MD, CCFP, MSc, FCFP, Associate Professor in the Department of Family Medicine at McMaster University and a family physician at the Stonechurch Family Health Centre and the developer of OSCAR

Sunday House Call - Dr. Norm Campbell
As you have heard Dr. Dworkin state quite emphatically on recent editions of Sunday House Call, we consume too much salt and most of it is derived from food manufacturers and restaurants.

Cardiovascular disease is the number one cause of death in Canada with three out of four people having a lifetime risk of dying from it. A report published in the Canadian Medical Association Journal looked at the effect excess sodium has on Canadians and how straightforward reductions in salt intake could have a positive impact on public health saving lives and reducing health care costs.

Dr. Dworkin is joined by Dr. Norm Campbell, Professor of Medicine, Community Health Sciences and Pharmacology and Therapeutics at the University of Calgary. He chairs the Steering and Executive Committees for the Canadian Hypertension Education Program and also chairs the Pan American Health Organization Expert Sodium Working Group (part of the WHO).

Sunday House Call - Dr. Eduardo Franco
The advent of the PAP test in the 1960’s, a screening test to detect abnormal cells of the cervix that might lead to cancerous change, has had a tremendous positive impact on women’s health.

There are various recommendations on when to start screening, how often to screen and what medical management should be if the results are abnormal. Three studies in the July 29, 2009 edition of the British Medical Journal, examined the outcomes of various management approaches when the Pap test was abnormal with respect to the age of patient.

The study lends support to raise the age at which women should start Pap screening to detect cervical cancer.
