Madely's Top 5

5. Sens collapse

The Rangers dealt the Senators a crushing blow to their playoff hopes. The Sens gave up a devastating 8-4 loss with only 14 games remaining. The Rangers are 9 points ahead of the Sens for the final playoff spot in the East. The Habs spoiled Patrick Roy's first return to Montreal as head coach of the Avalanche with a 6-3 win. The Red Wings beat the Leafs 3-2.

4. More soldier suicides

Just as our remaining troops return home from Afghanistan, we learn two more soldiers who had served there have taken their own lives. 44-year-old Cpl. Alain Lacasse was found dead in his home Monday afternoon in Valcartier, Quebec. Near Pembroke, Master Cpl. Tyson Washburn was found dead on Saturday, also seeming to have taken his own life. He was from The 1st Battalion of The Royal Canadian Regiment in Pembroke.

3. Missing jet search hampered by secrecy

Military secrecy may be delaying the discovery of the whereabouts of the missing Malaysian jet. Malaysian and U.S. officials still believe the aircraft was deliberately diverted. Safety experts and diplomats say the investigation is being hampered by the reluctance of many countries to share intelligence from the military radar. They are also talking down the possibility that an electrical fire could have prompted the pilots to turn off the electronics before they succumbed to the fumes, which is subject to much online speculation.

2. Tense situation in Crimea

Pro-Russian activists, some of them armed, stormed a Ukranian naval base in the Crimean city of Sevastopol. Apparently no shots were fired and Russian flags are seen flying from buildings. Fears are growing of more widespread violence erupting in the aftermath of Russia's annexation. Canada, the U.S. and Europe are stepping up sanctions and calling the annexation illegal and a violation of international law.

1. Hold onto your wallets!

If your household income is over $150,000, prepare to pay! The Toronto Star says the Ontario Liberal government budget will increase your taxes by applying the wealth surtax which, up until now, is applied to households over $500,000. Meantime, 73-year-old Harper government cabinet minister, Joe Oliver, praised for his hard-driving energy and business smarts, will be tapped to replace retiring Finance Minister Jim Flaherty.
