Madely's Top 5

5. Next step for Sens

The Ottawa Senators have tough decisions to make. Will they re-sign unrestricted free agents Ales Hemsky, Milan Michalek. Will they re-sign Jason Spezza, who has one year left on his deal, or try to trade him? Will coach Paul MacLean keep his job? In a news conference yesterday, MacLean said, "I felt in my third year I needed to be a little bit more demanding on what I wanted from the group and that was a change I felt would be good."

4. Civil war in Ukraine?

Russia has declared Ukraine on the brink of civil war 24 hours after the Ukrainian ultimatum expired for separatists to lay down their arms. Witnesses, however, are reporting no signs yet that Ukranian forces were ready to storm state buildings in the Russian-speaking east where rebels have occupied a number of buildings. Ukraine has accused Russia of stirring up the separatists following its annexation of Crimea, but Moscow says Kiev has provoked the crisis by ignoring the interests of its citizens who use Russian as their first language.

3. Bus driver allegedly drunk

Witnesses intervened when a school bus driver arrived at a Hull school yesterday afternoon appearing to be intoxicated. School staff at St. Paul Elementary School on Rue Isabelle pulled the children off the van and held the driver until police arrived. Police say the man was driving with an invalid license and that he had at least one conviction for impaired driving in 2009. When he was taken to a nearby police station, his blood alcohol measured nearly 4 times the limit.

2. Conspiracy for murder?

Both OC Transpo drivers accused in the murder of Barrhaven mom Jagtar Gill came to Canada through arranged marriages. Gurpreet Ronald refused her arranged marriage and instead married a white man. But Bhupinderpal Gill, her longtime co-worker, and now co-accused, and rumoured romantic partner, lived for 17 years with the wife he was arranged to marry. The couple had three children. Police are indicating, but have not formally indicated in court, that they believe Bhupinderpal Gill conspired to bring about the killing of his wife, Jagtar.

1. 'Revenue Tools' coming

Premier Kathleen Wynne's long promised announcement on provincial transit expansion, and new revenue streams to pay for it, turned out to be about a new name for the old habit of borrowing and creating huge holes elsewhere in the provincial budget that will have to be made up with some kind of tax increase, most likely with increased taxes on whoever ends up being defined as wealthy. Wynne announced a portion of gas taxes will be dedicated to her $29 billion ten-year plan, but to fill the shortfall that leaves elsewhere, she deferred, saying she will introduce new revenue tools without impacting low and middle income earners.
