Madely's Top 5

5. Raptors in control

The Raptors beat the Brooklyn Nets 115 to 113 in a nail biter that has Toronto leading the NBA series 3-2. In the NHL, the first round of the playoffs is over. The Rangers, Wild and Kings all advanced last night. Round two gets underway tonight with the Habs and Bruins meeting in Boston at 7:30, on CBC TV. Tomorrow the Rangers go up against Pittsburgh and Minnesota against Chicago.

4. Whodunnit

Still no word from the city on whether it has confirmed VIA Rail's allegations that on two occasions OC Transpo drivers failed to stop when lights were flashing at the Fallowfield Road level crossing. In one of the incidents, VIA says the bus stopped beyond the stop line, and as the gate was being lowered it was damaged. City manager Kent Kirkpatrick was to meet with VIA Rail yesterday.

3. Canadian Navy helping Ukraine

As part of NATO's military buildup in support of Ukraine, Canada is adding a Navy frigate to its military commitment in Central and Eastern Europe. This is in addition to six CF-18 fighter jets assigned to NATO training missions. The prime minister calls this part of NATO's reassurance package for Ukraine. Britain and France each sent eight fighter jets to Lithuania and Poland. United States is sending in troops from its airborne division to participate in training in Estonia.

2. Budget day in Ontario

The $90 million question is whether Ontario voters prefer the opposition parties to work with the Wynne government and pass the budget, or cause an election by defeating the budget being tabled at 4pm at Queen's Park. The $90 million is roughly what it costs to run an election. Leaks this week suggests tax increases are coming for households with incomes of over $150,000. There may also be a hike to aviation fuel taxes and higher taxes on tobacco.

1. Ford goes to rehab

Toronto Mayor Rob Ford is taking an immediate one month leave of absence saying he needs help for his substance abuse or, "I know I'm going to die." There are three new tapes being shopped around to the media. The Toronto Star editor says in addition to two that are widely known to exist. One is audio in which the Mayor allegedly talks in lewd fashion about female candidates for the mayor's office, another video shows him allegedly smoking crack cocaine. There is a third, according to the Star, which would be classified as a sex tape. The Toronto Mayor has been in a downward party spiral since just before St. Patrick's Day, according to reports.
