5. World Cup final is set

It will be Argentina against Germany in the World Cup final Sunday afternoon. Argentina beat the Netherlands 4-2 on penalty kicks yesterday after the two teams played to a scoreless tie.

4. DC relents

In response to public pressure, DC Entertainment has changed its mind and is allowing the Superman logo to appear on a statue of Jeffrey Baldwin. Baldwin died when he was five years old after being starved and neglected by his grandparents. After hearing that the boy had been a fan of Superman, an Ottawa man, Todd Boyce, raised the money to build a statue depicting the boy in the superhero's costume.

3. Texting and driving penalties to rise

Premier Kathleen Wynne is promising to reintroduce legislation with tougher penalties and demerit points for distracted driving. The premier was responding to a report that showed an alarming number of teenagers admit to texting while driving. Almost half the Grade 12 students with driver's licenses who were surveyed by the Centre of Addiction and Mental Health said they had texted while driving.

2. Oliver balks at carbon tax

Federal Finance Minister Joe Oliver says Liberal Leader Justin Trudeau wants to impose a multi-billion-dollar tax on everything. Last week Trudeau confirmed he was exploring a carbon tax. He said regardless of whether larger industrial nations like China and the U.S. tax emissions, Canada should set an example. Oliver says such a policy would be harmful to the economy and undermine Canada's competitiveness.

1. Cash in the compost

City council will now have to decide what to do about the Orgaworld contract. After learning yesterday that almost $8 million in taxpayers money has been wasted on the contract so far, and that millions more could be wasted in the years ahead, the city must now consider a recommendation from the auditor general to cancel the contract. The city seems to think that it would cost about $10 million to cancel the deal, but Orgaworld says the cost would be more like $56 million.
