City shells out $9.5M for legal claims in 2013

The city anted up about $9.5 million to settle all legal claims last year, including a whopping $2.6 million payout stemming from a transit vehicle hitting a pedestrian or cyclist.

In total, at least $4.5 million dollars was paid out for claims against OC Transpo for all of last year, though it's likely higher since the city only reveals a brief description of what department was involved for cases that top $100,000.

A report for city hall's finance committee shows that within the last three months of 2013 alone, taxpayers were on the hook for $1.3 million in payouts for OC Transpo claims.

Details relating to the specific incident or which employee was involved are not disclosed.
