Politicians, athletes and media lace up for inaugural Canal Classic

It's a showdown between politicians, hockey professionals and journalists.

The first annual Canal Classic hockey game starts at 7:45a.m. Thursday with opening remarks from Governor General David Johnston.

Athletes, Parliamentarians, media and representatives from Canadian Tire and Sport Chek will lace up for their friendly game in the inaugural event on the historic Canal.

Some attendees include Shaun van Allen, NHL Alumni and Cheryl Pounder, double Olympic gold medallist with the Canadian Women's National Hockey Team Alumni.

There will be trophies given out and an open skate for Jumpstart kids from 9-10a.m.

All the money raised goes to Jumpstart Charities in the hometowns of everyone involved. The national program helps kids from unprivileged families participate in organized sports and extracurricular activities by covering costs of registration, equipment and transportation.
