Minimum wage hike to help reduce poverty: labour minister

A 75 cent hike to the minimum wage isn't the nearly $4 raise some lobbyists were hoping for but the Ministry of Labour says it's a fair increase that supports businesses and their employees alike.

Labour minister Yasir Naqvi said his ministry is hoping the 6 month warning will eliminate many of the challenges for small businesses.

"The advisory panel was really good in giving us guidance on that and they felt that kind of a notice period and tying (minimum wage) to cost of inflation should have minimal impact on businesses," he said.

It should also help in reducing the prevalence of poverty in Ontario.

Naqvi said someone working full-time on $11 per hour will make enough to be living above the poverty line after taxes.
