Non-profit offers free tax return service to low income residents

Social justice group Ottawa ACORN is gearing up to once again offer its free tax service for low income residents.

The service is by appointment only and runs from February 20th to the end of May.

This is the sixth year they've been helping people file their taxes, and they expect to serve 1,000 residents this year.

Last year they helped more than 800 people file their 2012 returns.

Diane Rochon, with ACORN told CFRA the service makes a big difference for people who are scraping by.

"People who work with minimum wage, they have so much stress in their life," said Rochon. "If we can take a few away from them, it's a good thing, you know?"

ACORN will also help moderate income families file their taxes. They have to pay a small fee, but all of the money helps the non-profit recoup its costs.
