With the pride flag flying at Ottawa City Hall and on the same day of the opening ceremonies, Mayor Jim Watson is blasting the IOC for awarding the Winter Games to Russia.
Watson said he doesn't think athletes should boycott the event, arguing they train hard to showcase their talents once every 4 years.
But the International Olympic Committee needs to re-evaluate who gets to host the event.
"I think on a go forward basis, these organizations that choose countries that basically turn their back on basic human rights should not be rewarded with Winter Games or other major events," he said on Friday morning. "It is a complete throwback to another era, another unacceptable era, that they (Russian government) have this anti-gay, lesbian, bi-sexual, transgendered policy or law on the books."
Other cities, such as Montreal and St. John's, are also flying the pride flag until the Winter Games are over.
Reports this week stated Russia's deputy prime minister urged gay, lesbian, bi-sexual and transgendered athletes and visitors to "not touch the children," seemingly linking homosexuality and pedophilia.
