Watson: City Officials Lead the Way in Being More Accountable

by Jasleen Singh

Mayor Jim Watson says the city takes the lead in being accountable and transparent about expenses, donations and lobbyist groups.

Watson and Integrity Commissioner Robert Marleau spoke at Carleton University last night about the city's efforts to strengthen public trust.

The municipal government made an innovative move by updating its hospitality, travel and campaign expenses on the city's website on a monthly basis.

Watson says the initiative will make ethical decision-making easier for elected officials because it makes their financial records more available to the public.

"What's particularly important is that we put these measures in place because we wanted to, not because we had to due to a scandal, or the hint of a scandal, " says Watson. "It was about bringing credibility and stability back to City Hall and I'm confident in saying we've done that."

The public can also access a gift registry on the city's website.

It provides information about any elected official who accepts gifts over thirty dollars.

Watson and Marleau encourage the public to visit the website and provide feedback.
