A Barrhaven woman has been found guilty, of failing to provide necessary care for an animal and permitting distress, after her cat became so obese he couldn't groom himself.
12 year old Napoleon was 25 pounds when he was brought to the Ottawa Humane Society, and couldn't stand or clean himself.
As a result, his fur was severely matted and his hind end was covered in painful skin irritations.
He was in such bad shape, the OHS say they decided to put him down.
Guylene Roy has been fined $1220, and has been banned from owning animals for five years, not including another cat she currently owns.
As part of the sentence, inspectors can now check up on that animal at any time to be sure it's in good health.
The OHS says the verdict sends the message that ignoring the suffering of a pet has serious consequences.
