A massive sinkhole has closed the eastbound lanes of Laurier Avenue at Waller Street.
It measures about 25 feet wide and 40 feet deep.
City of Ottawa staff are on site of the sinkhole and say they don't yet know the cause of the collapse or whether it is in fact a sinkhole or a washout.
The site of the sinkhole is within 100 metres of the site where city crews have been digging for the Confederation Line of Ottawa's Light Rail Transit plan.
A source to CFRA said there have been problems with soil conditions at the site for a long time and they may have contributed to today's road collapse. The source said some elements of necessary work for the dig could weaken nearby soil.
Today is the one year anniversary of construction on the Confederation Line project and city staff are set to hold a press conference celebrating its progress at 1:15p.m.
