It's not exactly the sport Canada is known for but Mayor Jim Watson wants the world to come and play soccer in our backyard.
Watson has written a letter to the Canadian Soccer Association outlining his intention to support a Canadian bid to play host to the FIFA World Cup in 2026.
He says he wanted to show Ottawa's interest as soon as he knew the CSA was planning a bid for the games. Ottawa is already hosting some events for the FIFA Women's World Cup next year. Watson says he's confident the city could welcome the men's tournament one day.
"I cannot think of a more fitting location than Ottawa to play host to this prestigious sporting event," Watson writes in the public letter.
With the Ottawa Fury soccer team making its debut this summer, the Ottawa Sports and Entertainment Group would be an essential part of getting the tournament to run smoothly.
