Mayor Jim Watson is leading the charge to fly the Ukrainian flag at City Hall during the Paralympic Games in Sochi.
Watson told CFRA he's urging his colleagues in Canada's big cities to do the same.
"I think it's an opportunity for municipalities to send a very clear signal to the Russians and the Russian government that their illegal and unlawful activities by invading a sovereign country, namely Ukraine, is not accepted," said Watson. "We have a large Ukrainian-Canadian population in Canada and in Ottawa and it's a way for us to say we're standing in solidarity with those people from Ukraine."
Watson sent a letter to his colleagues in the Big City Mayors' Caucus Wednesday morning, saying the gesture would also show their support for the federal government's opposition to the actions of the Russian Federation.
Montreal Mayor Denis Coderre tweeted a picture of the flag flying at Montreal's city hall Wednesday afternoon.
Ottawa flew its flag at half-mast two weeks ago following the mass deaths in Kyiv.
