Security Staff at Carleton University on Strike

Security staff at Carleton University are on strike. After spending the weekend at the bargaining table, talks between the university and OPSEU Local 404, representing patrol service staff, have broken off. The union says this is the first strike for special constables at a Canadian university, and 50 security officers are on strike. Garda security guards have been hired on contract during the job action.

The university and unions have been trying to reach an agreement on a number of issues, including higher pay, better benefits and job security. As of midnight Monday, the unions were in legal position to strike.

The union representing 2500 contract instructors and teaching assistants has reached a tentative settlement with the university. CUPE Local 4600 stayed at the table past the deadline to reach a deal. Details of the settlement will be released after a ratification vote.

The university says it will stay open, and regularly scheduled classes will continue even though there is a strike. The school is warning that picket lines will affect vehicle and pedestrian traffic. If you are travelling to the campus, expect delays crossing picket lines, and the school suggests departing earlier to reach your destination. It is expected that OC Transpo will not cross the picket line. Pick up and drop off sites will be located adjacent to the campus.
