In a celebration at City Hall the United Way has unveiled a plaque honouring the dozens of recipients of the 2013 Community Builder Awards.
The recognition often comes as a complete surprise to the winners.
After a lifetime of dedication to the men at the Ottawa Mission Diane Morrison says she was humbled to be recognized as the community builder of the year.
"I thought, who on earth is going to give acknowledgement to somebody who runs a homeless shelter with a bunch of men in it? And I realized that the Ottawa Mission had certainly grown beyond where it was when I came and we had connected well in the community," she said.
She was honoured alonside dozens of other recipients including Hélène Campbell, LiveWorkPlay, Beau' Brewery, Operation Come Home, Noella Charles of the St. Lucia Ottawa Association and CFRA's own Rick Gibbons.
The Community Builder Awards identifies outstanding volunteers, including organizations, partnerships, agencies, neighbourhood groups and individuals, who work tirelessly and passionately to make Ottawa a better place to live, work and raise a family.
