Craft breweries are a growing trend in Ottawa, reflecting a history that stretches back to before prohibition when brewing was incredibly popular in the capital.
Dominion City Brewing Co. is committed to reviving that history while using local materials, ingredients and taste as well as meeting a growing demand for beer brewed right here in town.
One of the founders, Alex Monk, said sourcing local ingredients is about more than just the improved taste.
"They provide a connection to the community and provide strength in that connection to the land that we want but there's also this sort of prevailing trend right now to know where the stuff you're putting in your body comes from," he said, adding that even extends to beer.
The company created a business model and is building a state-of-the-art brewery on Canotek Road just off of Montreal Road in the east end and they're anticipating opening the doors in July.
But there's one final piece they're still working to put together.
They're hoping local beer connoisseurs will want to get involved in building the tasting bar and bottle room at the brewery. The company plans to use recovered timber from the bottom of the Ottawa River to decorate the bar.
With co-founder Josh McJannett Dominion City Brewing Co. has launched a Kickstarter campaign to raise the $15,000 needed to complete that project by the launch date.
