Premier denies moratorium request on agricultural college closures

Premier Kathleen Wynne has denied a request for a two-year moratorium on the closure of the University of Guelph campuses in Kemptville and Alfred.

She notes the university is an autonomous organization with the authority to make these decisions.

Leeds-Grenville MPP Steve Clark - who asked for the moratorium - stressed the importance of keeping agricultural education local during question period on Monday.

"5000 people have signed an online petition standing up for these agricultural colleges," says Clark. "We need to be able to teach innovation close to home."

Wynne expressed a desire for the parties to work together to find local solutions to keep the colleges open.
