Five homeless after west end fire

A home in the Carp area of Ottawa's west end has been completely destroyed by fire.

Two adults and three children are now homeless.

Emergency crews were called to 109 Topol Lane around 5:15 Sunday afternoon. The garage was fully ablaze when crews arrived, and the fire had spread to the 2nd floor and attic of the two-storey house.

Crews had to keep a 400 lb. propane tank next to the house cool, as they took a defensive stance when battling the blaze.

No one was inside the home when crews arrived, but a 13 year old boy has been taken to CHEO for smoke inhalation after he discovered the flames and tried to use a fire extinguisher to put them out.

A fire investigator has been called to the scene to determine the cause.

Damages are estimated at $1 million.
