A number of residents east of Ottawa have been allowed back into their homes early this morning after a gas leak has been repaired.
Approximately 40 homes in the Vars area were evacuated Saturday evening as a precaution, after a massive fire destroyed a two storey home earlier in the day. Ottawa Fire Sector Chief Tim McNeely tells CFRA a gas line was ruptured in the blaze. Fire officials say Enbridge needed to dig two holes to isolate the natural gas leak, and hydro crews turned the power off to the entire block to prevent possible ignition sources.
Ottawa Fire says they first responded to the call around 5:20 Saturday afternoon for the blaze at 1861 Division Street. No one was in the home at the time the call came in, and no injuries have been reported. Callers to CFRA reported seeing the blaze and smoke from a few kilometres away. Investigators have not yet determined what caused the fire, and damage to the home is pegged at $200,000.
