The Ottawa REDBLACKS are dropping their new mascot's last name over fears it offended the French community.
The mascot was named 'Big Joe Mufferaw' the fictional lumberjack made famous in a song by Stompin' Tom Connors.
The name is an anglicized version of Joseph Montferrand, an Outaouais logger and defender of Francophone rights and OSEG president of Sports Jeff Hunt is apologizing for unintentionally offending some people with the variation of the name.
The mascot will now be called "Big Joe" in English and "Grand Jos" in French.
The mascot's name was chosen after a poll of fans.
