Smiths Falls drivers reminded to buckle up

Police in Smiths Falls are on the lookout for seatbelt infractions this month.

April is Seatbelt Month and officers will be enforcing all rules associated with them.

A driver can be charged and face a fine of between $200 and $1,000 for not wearing a seatbelt; they also receive demerit points upon conviction.

Drivers are responsible for ensuring everyone under 16 in their car is properly buckled up; passengers 16 and over can also be fined for not wearing a seatbelt.

More than 600,000 Ontarians still do not regularly wear a seatbelt and police say for every one per cent increase in seatbelt use, five lives are saved.
