Gatineau firefighters checking residents' smoke, CO detectors

Gatineau firefighters will be going door-to-door in the region starting May 1.

They'll be checking to see if residents have working smoke and carbon monoxide detectors.

By law in Gatineau, it is mandatory to have a carbon monoxide detector within five metres of every bedroom in a building that has a fuel-burning appliance or shares a wall, floor or ceiling with a garage.

Residents also need to have a smoke alarm on each floor.

Fines for breaching the regulations can reach $300.
