Residents, politicians ramp up pressure on VIA to fix signals

While advanced warning lights continue to fail at level rail crossings, VIA Rail has stationed crews at the Fallowfield crossing and is using what they call a standard work-around at two other crossings in Barrhaven.

Neither step is reassuring residents who drive over the tracks every day.

There was one RailTerm engineer stationed at the Fallowfield level crossing Thursday, watching for continued malfunctions; there were no crews — repair or otherwise — at either the Jockvale or Strandherd crossings.

Councillor Jan Harder is fuming at the fact there's no permanent solution to these problems and her constituents agree.

"In this day and age, it doesn't take that long," she said. "It shouldn't take that long."

"I don't understand what's going on," one resident said.

There have been 13 failures this year at level rail crossings in Barrhaven, but VIA insists they are complying with federal regulations.

Both Transport Canada and the Transportation Safety Board say their records show VIA hasn't breached any safety policies.
