Premier apologizes to former Rideau Regional Centre residents

Premier Kathleen Wynne has issued an apology on behalf of the government to anyone who faced abuse or neglect while staying at the Rideau Regional Centre in Smiths Falls, also taking responsibility.

The government-run centre - which closed in 2009 - was a home for people with developmental disabilities.

A written statement from Wynne says the government failed to uphold the trust that families had put into the care facility.

The apology also extends to former residents at Southwestern Regional Centre in Chatham-Kent.

Accusations of abuse and neglect led to class-action lawsuits, which have been tentatively settled.
