Smiths Falls police arrest impaired driver, find cocaine

What started off as an anonymous tip about a drunk driver ended with four arrests in Smiths Falls.

Police say they got the tip Thursday night, and stopped a vehicle on Empress Avenue. Officers quickly determined the driver was impaired, after he provided a breath sample over the legal limit.

As they were searching the car, police found a small amount of what they believe was cocaine in the purse of one of the passengers. A 27-year-old woman was then arrested and handcuffed and placed in the back of a cruiser, but she tried to escape, and tore off a door handle.

The accused driver, a 29-year-old Smiths Falls man, is charged with impaired driving, and driving while suspended. He was released on a promise to appear in the custody of Ottawa Police on an outstanding warrant.

The woman is charged with possession of a controlled substance, attempting to escape lawful custody, and mischief. She was released on a promise to appear.

Two other people were arrested, but later released at the scene.

None of the allegations have been proven in court.
