It was a horrific accident that left a mother dead.
CTV News has learned the pedestrian who died after being struck by an SUV Saturday, is 54-year-old Tammy Conley of Trenton.
Her 80-year-old father was behind the wheel at the time. He was trying to park the vehicle and accidently accelerated, running his daughter over.
The car jumped the curb and stopped on the lawn of a home on Parkdale. The homeowner was alerted to the crash by the screams of Tammy's 15-year-old daughter, who was there to witness the horrific accident.
Tammy's husband, Brad Conley told CTV News in an interview, the entire Trenton community is devastated.
"It's like our hearts have all been ripped out. It's not supposed to be this way. She's one of those people who was supposed to be there for all of us...and it's just devastating to us all."
Tammy was with her elderly father and daughter visiting her mother at the Civic Campus of the Ottawa Hospital on Parkdale Avenue.
In a release on Saturday, Ottawa police said "the driver reversed into the space and struck one vehicle parked behind him." That's when Tammy ran out in front of the vehicle to help. Police say the driver accelerated forward hitting another car and then running over the woman.
The Conley family lives three hours away in Trenton.
When Brad returned home with his son and daughter last night, they were greeted by friends waiting to give emotional support as they grieve.
Tammy Conley was a funeral director in Trenton for more than 30 years. She is survived by her parents, husband of 24 years Brad, 18-year-old son Mason, and 15-year-old daughter Samantha.
