Gatineau Police investigating suspicious death in Aylmer

The Gatineau Police Major Crimes Unit is investigating the suspicious death of a 42-year-old woman in the Aylmer sector.

Police were called to an apartment block on Symmes Street around 8:20 p.m. Sunday, where they found the woman suffering from serious injuries.

She was taken to hospital where she was pronounced dead at 3:24 a.m.

Officers arrested a 49-year-old man, described as a "person of interest" shortly after they arrived on scene.

Investigators were scheduled to question him Monday.

Sgt. Pierre Lanthier with Gatineau Police said the man and the victim may have been in a relationship, but he wasn't able to confirm that detail.

He said a third person called 911 to say the woman may have been seriously injured. That person is collaborating with police.

Neighbours awoke Monday to their parking lot cordoned off by orange police tape. The door to the woman's home was also taped off.

Investigators interviewed residents as they exited their homes.

Neighbours said they were shocked to hear something like this could have happened in their quiet community.

"It's a quiet area," said Manon Chartrand who walks by the apartment every day. "It's a good place to live. I've been living around here for 10 years, but with that, it kind of scares me. Like I say - everywhere you can have anybody that's nuts."

Lanthier said he did not believe police had been called to that address in the past.
