Armenians gather to remember genocide

Hilary Thomson, Carleton School of Journalism

Armenian Canadians gathered on Parliament Hill Thursday to commemorate the 99th anniversary of the Armenian genocide.

Vana Foudoulian is one of many Armenian Canadians travelling from Montreal for the rally; she came to Ottawa Wednesday to participate in an overnight vigil held in front of the Turkish embassy.

"We're just here to thank Canada for recognizing the genocide and we're asking the Turkish ambassador and Turkey to recognize the genocide," she said.

Representatives from Turkey also gathered on Parliament Hill Thursday; they say the death of 1.5 million Armenians starting in 1915 should not be considered genocide as Turkey lost just as many people before and during the First World War.
