Costly winter puts City of Ottawa in the red

It was the worst winter in 20 years according to the record books, and now, the city's bills are confirming the damage.

A city report filed online Tuesday confirms this winter put the City of Ottawa in the red.

Road maintenance cost $13 million more than anticipated in the first quarter of this year. Snow clearing took up a lot of the budget, including some clean-up that continued after December storms.

Potholes made up the rest of the deficit.

The economic development committee report will be reviewed at City Hall in a couple of weeks.

Water usage was also a culprit in first quarter shortfalls. Consumption was down significantly over the winter, sending the city's water budget into a $5.6 million shortfall.
