Indo-Canadians kick off Asian Heritage Month

Indo-Canadian representatives from every generation gathered in the auditorium at the Main Branch of the Ottawa Library on Wednesday evening to celebrate their cultural heritage.

The event included a panel of Indo-Canadian professionals who promoted discussion about what it means to be both Indian and Canadian as well as some traditional song and dance performances.

Anish Mehra, the President of the Indo-Canadian Community Centre says is it sometimes difficult to find a balance between South Asian and Canadian heritage.

“When do you stop yourself from being a South Asian Canadian and just being a Canadian and you know for some aspects of your life it happens sooner than others but often when people see you the first thing they think is South Asian and then the Canadian sort of comes second,” Mehra told CFRA.

The discussion was the first of many events that will be held throughout the city as part of Asian Heritage Month.
