OSTA signs new contracts, forcing 300 Stock drivers to switch operators

Negotiations for school bus route contracts in Ottawa have ended and the Ottawa Student Transportation Authority confirms they have contracts with First Student Canada and three new companies.

But they haven't renewed contracts with Stock bus lines and a driver for that company tells CFRA that will effectively bring an end to routes run by Stock.

He said there are roughly 300 drivers who will have to shift to working for the three smaller companies. OSTA spokesperson Vicky Kyriaco confirmed they are working with Stock and the new companies to make the transition as smooth as possible.

"By having that communication and also communicating with the schools themselves to talk about what the transition plan is going to be, we believe that that transition will be very smooth in September 2014," she said.

The plan is to work with the school boards as well to limit the impact on students and their parents.

OSTA is continuing with public consultations being held to test the waters on changing school start times to allow them to amalgamate some of their routes and reduce the number of buses and drivers on the roads.
