Ottawa boy facing 60 "swatting" charges

Ottawa Police have laid 60 charges against a 16-year-old boy for "swatting."

"Swatting" is making phony emergency calls, resulting in swat teams going to the scenes of bomb threats or shootings that aren't happening.

Staff Sergeant Rick Baldwin-Ooms tells CFRA these cases aren't common in Ottawa.

He couldn't confirm exactly which places the calls were made, but police agencies in Calgary, Laval, and the Greater Toronto Area, as well as the FBI all assisted in the investigation.

Police say the accused is suspect in at least 30 of these incidents in North America.

The suspect, whose name is protected under the Youth Criminal Justice Act, will make a court appearance Friday.
