VIA Rail gets a new CEO

Follows calls for leadership change from local MP and cabinet minister John Baird

After weeks of technical glitches in Barrhaven, much public backlash, and a call for change from local MP and federal cabinet minister John Baird, VIA Rail has named a new Chief Executive Officer.

Yves Desjardins-Siciliano is the new CEO and President of the Crown corporation. The appointment was announced Sunday by Transport Minister Lisa Raitt.

Desjardins-Siciliano has been appointed to a five-year term.

Baird, who is Foreign Affairs Minister and former Transport Minister, has publicly called for new leadership, but VIA suggests the current interim leader Steve Del Boso was not in line to become the permanent president.

Del Bosco, who faced much criticism over the handling of the malfunctioning railway crossing signals in Barrhaven, is to return to his previous duties as VIA’s Chief Commercial Planning Officer.
