The Ottawa Police Service launched its first iPhone and iPad app Monday at the kick-off of Police Week.
The app features a crime map, a phone number directory, and will allow people to report crimes online. The crime reporting function is also a feature of OPS's new website.
The app and website can only be used to report property crimes, and that's because personal crimes require more one-on-one contact between the police and the victim, according to Deputy Chief Jill Skinner,
Police Chief Charles Bordeleau says police looked to other police websites and the City of Ottawa's website before putting the crime reporting function online. He says he's confident the public will find it useful.
"We understand that not everybody wants to come to the police station or phone in," he said. "Giving our community a different option to report crimes is something that we heard and that we responded to."
The new app is only available for iPhone and iPad but Skinner says Blackberry and Android versions are coming soon
