Update: Two in court on Byward Market gun charges

A member of one of Ottawa's gangs is appearing in court Tuesday to face several charges after police seized a loaded handgun early Monday morning in the ByWard Market.

Mohamed Najdi, 26, is facing ten counts, including three related to probation conditions imposed upon him when he was convicted of a previous shooting-related offense.

"Mr. Najdi is well-known to the Ottawa Police Service through our interactions with him over the years," said Staff Sgt. Ken Bryden.

Bryden said Najdi is a longtime gang member in the city.

Ali Dia, 20, is also facing seven counts related to firearms possession.

Police found the gun in a car carrying the pair on George Street.

Officers had been responding to several calls of shots fired in the area.

No one was injured.
