Ottawa's Liberal candidates say if Ontario gets Tim Hudak, Ottawa could lose the Montfort.
Speaking at a press conference at the hospital Thursday morning, Ottawa Vanier candidate Madeleine Meilleur told reporters she believes Progressive Conservative leader Hudak was at the table when Mike Harris tried to close the Montfort Hospital when he was premier. Harris announced the hospital would be closed in February 1997, but outcry from the community forced his government to rethink the decision.
While Hudak has said he wouldn't cut any front-line care, Meilleur says we've heard similar promises before, pointing to Mike Harris' promise to close no hospitals before he closed more than two dozen, including two in Ottawa.
When asked why they were so concerned since Tim Hudak isn't Mike Harris, Meilleur said Hudak's promises are similar to ones made by his old boss before he was elected.
"Mike Harris promised to eliminate 15,000 jobs in Ontario. Tim Hudak, it's 100,000 jobs in Ontario," she said. "I think it's more scary than the past experience."
Nepean Carleton PC candidate Lisa MacLeod called the allegations "fear mongering," and says her party has had successful meetings with the hospital.
