New initiative aims to get Ottawa's kids active

Public elementary and middle school students across Ottawa are embarking on a full day of exercise, but it won't all happen in one day.

The children will be breaking it down into one-hour chunks — an hour a day over the next 24 school days.

The Longest Day of Play is backed by the Ottawa-Carleton District School Board, the Education Foundation of Ottawa and the Ottawa Senators Foundation.

Chris McGarvey, the executive director of the Education Foundation, notes a recent report on the health of our kids gave Canada a D-minus.

"We feel that this is a wonderful opportunity to get kids active, get kids outside enjoying themselves and creating a healthy habit," he told CFRA's Madely in the Morning. "Let's get them doing something good these days and get them out from in front of the TVs and the video games."

Senators Foundation Director Jonathan Bodden says it's a perfect fit for his organization, now that it's focusing on social recreation and education for children.
