Wakefield Elementary student diagnosed with scarlet fever

School board officials have confirmed to CFRA that a case of scarlet fever was diagnosed in one student at Wakefield Elementary School in Western Quebec.

Marion Lothian, director of education at the Western Quebec School Board, says a protocol for cleaning and information distribution was followed yesterday after the case was confirmed. She says because the child had already been out of school for about a week, officials deemed it wasn't necessary to "deep clean" the school.

Lothian wasn't able to confirm the age or gender of the child.

This isn't the first time the school saw scarlet fever in its halls.  A child was diagnosed with the illness in October of last year.

There is no vaccination to prevent scarlet fever.
