Rabbi Bulka among many honoured at United Way awards night

Dedicated community members in Ottawa were honoured by the United Way at the Community Builder of the Year Awards, Thursday night.

Rabbi Reuven Bulka received this year's United Way Ambassador Award.

"There are so many different ways to help, it's endless, because the needs are endless, and just to be part of this is a real blessing," said Bulka.

He is well-known in the community for his spiritual and volunteer work. Among many other things, Bulka has donated blood nearly 350 times. Bulka hosts Sunday Night Live on CFRA.

James McCracken, who sits on several boards, took home the Volunteer of the Year award.

"In an era of the cult of the selfie, this is where we celebrate selflessness. Where people look outward, instead of inward and give back to those most vulnerable in our community," said McCracken.

The City of Ottawa was also honoured, for the Best Community Campaign. They raise an average of $500,000 every year for the organization.

The Vered family received the night's top honour -- the Community Builder of the Year Award.

Five other people were also honoured with a Community Builder Award.
