As of Saturday, which is also World No Tobacco Day, smoking is prohibited in all Ottawa Community Housing (OCH) units.
The Ottawa Council on Smoking or Health says its "delighted" about the new policy. Carol MacDonald, president of the group, says the organization was involved in doing research to support the ban.
"For instance, if you have coronary artery disease a half an hour of exposure to second hand smoke makes your platelets more sticky and therefore more liable to a cardiac event," she says.
She says she's sure OCH tenants will be a little irritated at first, but she has faith they'll adapt.
"There is probably a period of mild irritation, but I think, as we've seen with other policies and bylaws people do comply," she says, pointing to the ban on smoking on patios that was implemented two years ago.
She next the next goal for the council is to have the same policy implemented at the Sparks Street Mall and on Ottawa's hospital campuses.
