The City of Gatineau and the National Capital Commission have invested a combined $43 million into a project to rejuvenate Jacques Cartier Street.
Gatineau city councillor Myriam Nadeau says the project is about giving the water front back to the community.
She says the area is an important one for the city.
"This sector of the city is actually one of the oldest of the city," she says. "It's a crucial point in terms of the history of the region as a whole. In terms of investing in this, it's a strong identity for the City of Gatineau."
She says there's been plenty of support for the initiative.
The project will include installing a bike path along the Gatineau side of the river.
