A teen killed outside a hotel in downtown Ottawa early Saturday morning was part of a prom after-party.
Brandon Volpi, 18, was stabbed in the neck and chest during an incident outside Les Suites Hotel on Besserer Street around 3:30 a.m.
He later succumbed to his injuries in hospital.
Students from at least two schools were staying at the hotel Friday night after their proms.
No arrests have been made in the case and police have no person-of-interest yet.
A second male victim was also treated in hospital for minor injuries but has since been released.
Police say a weapon has not been recovered.
Friends and family are reacting with shock and extreme sadness.
Danny Volpi, the victim's father, wrote on Facebook "To my dear son may you rest in peace. I miss you with all my heart. May justice be served and find who killed my son."
Many condolences are pouring out on social media. On Facebook, Mary Younan wrote, "The victim was very pleasant and respectful. May he rest in peace and may God help all his loved ones." On Twitter, people are using the hashtag "#RIPVolpi" to express their grief.
The teen had been accepted to a police foundations program at Algonquin College, according to his dad.
Police were on scene for hours after the incident, with police tape blocking off an area outside the main doors of the hotel.
Clothes, blood and paramedic tools were visible on the side walk and near the statue outside the hotel for much of the day.
This is Ottawa's third homicide of 2014.
In a statement, the Ottawa Catholic School Board said it's cooperating fully with the police investigation.
The school will have counselling staff available to students and staff for as long as needed.
In the statement the board said, "The school community will be praying for the victim and family."
