Vigil held for murdered high school student

Friends and family held candles and sang hymns outside of Les Suites Hotel on Sunday night to honour a young man killed on what should have been a happy day.

Brandon Volpi, 18, was brutally stabbed outside the hotel early Saturday morning and later died in hospital.

Volpi and his fellow St. Patrick's High School students were celebrating after their prom when the incident took place.

According to Danny Volpi, Brandon's father, his son was walking a friend back to the hotel when they were swarmed by a group of 20, though that is unconfirmed by police.

On Monday, grief counsellors will be available for as long as needed at St. Patrick's High School.

Meanwhile, the Ottawa Police Major Crimes Unit continues to investigate the city's third homicide of the year. Detectives have been interviewing the dozens of students who were at the hotel at the time.

Anyone with information is being asked to contact 613-236-1222 ext. 5493 or Crime Stoppers 613-233-8477 or toll free 1-800-8477.
