OPSEU president warns Liberals would also cut public service jobs

The president of the largest provincial public service union is warning the Ontario Liberals are not what other union leaders are making them out to be.

OPSEU leader Smokey Thomas told CFRA some labour leaders have endorsed Kathleen Wynne without giving the other parties a fair chance.

"Some labour leaders, a couple - Sid Ryan [the president of the Ontario Federation of Labour] in particular - took a position before the budget was even read that Andrea Horwath should support the budget," he said. "He's been highly critical of me, highly critical of Andrea, which I think is totally unfair. I don't care what he says about me, but being critical of Andrea Horwath is just totally unfair. She's actually the only breath of fresh air in all this, the whole quagmire that's at Queen's Park."

He said while he doesn't agree with all of Tim Hudak's policies, the PC leader isn't the only one who would cut public service jobs.

"I think [Wynne's] just trying to get people to think that she's progressive, that she's not going to cut public services and that's simply not true," said Thomas. "That's why I said she was lying."

He said labour groups were so afraid of Tim Hudak that they were willing to take Wynne's budget in exchange for not having Tim Hudak.
